Response to Intervention

Response to Intervention (RtI) is the district-wide model for identifying and providing early intervention instruction to all students falling behind their peers in reading, math, and behavior.  This three-tiered model uses research-based intervention strategies to promote achievement prior to referral to special education.  The instructional strategies are matched to students’ needs and learning rate over a period of time.  It is a proactive, standards-based prevention model which should be considered prior to Special Education placement.

If a student fails to make sufficient progress based on the student’s response to intervention plan, then the student may be referred for a Full Individual Evaluation (FIE) by the Campus Student Intervention Team.  It should be noted that RtI is not necessarily a prerequisite to referral to special education.  However, the Texas Education Code states that as part of the district's overall, general education referral or screening system that prior to referral, students experiencing difficulty in the general classroom should be considered for all general education support services available to all students, such as tutorial; remedial; compensatory; response to scientific, research-based intervention; and other academic or behavior support services.
