South Ward teacher, LHS student honored by Rotary

Rotary ClubThe Longview Rotary Club honored South Ward Elementary teacher Sonya Lee Jones and Longview High senior Jensen Gates during their regular meeting Oct. 17 at the Summit Club of Longview.

Sonya and Jensen were recognized as the October 2017 Teacher of the Month and Student of the Month for excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

'Both of these individuals represent the best and brightest of the education community in Longview,' said Rotary Club member Dietrich Johnson. 'We are glad to celebrate their accomplishments in making our community stronger through education.'

Sonya Lee Jones

Sonya Lee JonesSonya has worked for Longview ISD since 2005 and has taught almost every grade level in elementary education, with 4th grade being her favorite. Currently she is a curriculum support secialist for South Ward.

Born and raised in Longview, Sonya attended Longview ISD schools, later earning Associate's and Bachelor's degrees from UT-Tyler in Criminal Justice, followed by a Master's in Educational Leadership from LeTourneau University.

Jensen Gates

Jensen GatesA senior in the International Baccalaureate program at Longview High, Jensen is also a member of the Technology Student Association and has competed with the team at Nationals. He is also active in UIL competition, earning honors in Debate, Computer Science, and Math.

Upon graduating, Jensen plans to major in biomedical engeineering or double major in biomedical engineering and medical engineering, although he has not yet decided which school to attend.

In addition to volunteering at Longview Public Library and Fellowship Bible Church (where he is a member), Jensen is a member of the varsity soccer, track, and cross-country teams.

The Longview Rotary Club recognizes a local teacher and student each month during regular luncheon meetings.
