The results are in and it's been another successful year for UIL Academic, LISD coordinator Jeannine Brandon announced on April 3.

Longview High School senior Brittney Campbell and sophomore Sage Thompson have qualified as state finalists in UIL Academic's Latino History essay.

Brandon said, as a part of the UIL Prep class, students chose an influential African American or Latino Texan to research and wrote an essay highlighting his/her life and how this person has been influential to Texas history.

'Our students will attend the state competition in Austin on April 21-22, where they will be introduced with ten other students from across the state,' she said. 'They will read an excerpt from their essay, and the top six writers will be announced.'

In addition, the finalists' papers will be archived with the Benson Latin American Collection, Brandon said.

'This is the first year that we have participated in the contest and will continue to enter through my UIL Prep classes,' she said.

LHS also earned Runner-Up to the 11-6A Championship at the UIL meet, Brandon said, 'and we performed well in Congress and in Robotics.'

Carrie Gilliland finished in 3rd, advancing to State, with 6th place Maddie Johnson earning alternate.

Congress is coached by Brittani Rogers.

Robotics finished as State alternate out of 54 schools competing.

Coached by Greg Hubbard and Antonio Pedroso, the Robotics team includes: Tyler Hendricks, Brandon Borens, Erath Islas, Van Nguyen, Jaqueline Sanchez, Guadalupe Aza, James Pierce, Kyle Hayes, and Dylan Martinez.

The high school play 'Anatomies' was selected as the 11-6A alternate play to bi-district, Brandon said.

'Named to All Star Cast were Abby Jester and Sid Montano, Honorable Mention All-Star Cast was Maddie Duvall, and All Star Tech was Elizabeth Adeeko,' she said. 'Directors are Pam Mercer McWilliams and Joshua Graves.'

Brandon said Longview High School's regional qualifiers travel to Waco on April 7-8 to compete at the regional meet.
