Communities In Schools and South Ward Elementary partnered up for a 'D.A.D. Workshop' at the campus this week.
Site Coordinator Wynetta Jones said the program, now in its second year at the school, continues to be a great way to engage the local community.
Guest speaker was Watch Dog 'Top Dog' Christopher Jones, and the program theme was 'Building a Stronger Bond and a Healthier Self Esteem.'
One popular activity involved fathers facing their children and raising both hands as if they were about to give their child a 'high five,' Jones said. The child then placed their palm matching up and touching their father's hands.
'The children were instructed to keep their hands doing whatever their dads' hands do and stay connected. Dads moved their hands in all directions at different speeds,' she said. 'The smiles were priceless!'
Jones said they were instructed to stop and then start again, but this time the children were to move their hands about 6-8 inches away from the fathers. Fathers begin moving their hands again in all directions at different speeds.
'The laughter was contagious!' she said. 'It's easy to see that when your hands are not connected to your child's hands, it's harder for them to follow you. I think the lesson from this is that when your hearts are connected to your child's heart, its hard for them to follow you too.'
