Once again Mayor Andy Mack is offering the City of Longview Mayoral Scholarship. Deadline is Friday, March 30 for any Longview students interested in applying.
Graduating students from Longview, Pine Tree, Spring Hill, or Hallsville ISDs are eligible to apply for the $2,000 Mayor Mack Scholarship to the college of their choosing. One scholarship will be awarded per high school equaling $8,000 in scholarships to area students for furthering their education.
Funding for this scholarship is provided by the mayor's annual stipend. Mack said that, rather than take a salary, the mayor's stipend will be used to invest in students' futures.
'I think it's a good thing to do for the community, for the kids something that is positive, something these kids appreciate,' he said.
A board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Andy Mack has been donating his city salary since first serving as a councilman from 1997 to 2005.
This year District 4 Councilwoman Kristen Ishihara is also contributing her stipend, raising the total scholarship amount from previous years.
Applicants must be a resident within the city limits of Longview and be a graduating senior from either Longview, Pine Tree, Spring Hill, or Hallsville school districts. Interested students must complete and return the scholarship application by 5 p.m. March 30. The application includes a one-page essay on how you desire to make an impact on improving Longview.
