Mario. Mega Man. Motion graphics. Bailey Elementary is about to transform into a high-energy hub of digital discovery, as Longview ISD hosted a Gaming Expo designed to introduce elementary students to the exciting world of Esports, game development, and digital arts.
The expo invited students and their families to explore creative career pathways in technology and media through hands-on breakout sessions and a Super Smash Bros. tournament.
“We want to spark imagination early,” said Dr. Krystal Christenson, Assistant Director of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP). “This isn’t just about gaming — it’s about giving students a vision for where their curiosity in technology, storytelling, and design can take them.”
The expo is part of a district-wide initiative to engage future-ready learners through interactive programming. Breakout sessions at the expo included:
- AI and Emerging Tech
- Video Production (featuring mobile tools and green screen basics)
- Audio Production (including podcasting and sound editing)
- Esports & Game Development (with real-time demos and game design tools)
- Program Overview (featuring the vision for digital innovation across LISD)
"We’re planting seeds for the next generation of creators, developers, and media professionals,” said Jeremy Stout, Digital Media and Graphic Arts Coordinator. “If a fourth grader walks away saying, ‘I want to build my own game or start a podcast,’ then we’ve done our job.”
While students competed for prizes in the Smash Bros. tournament, parents attended informative and interactive breakout sessions of their own. Raffle prizes were awarded to encourage participation, as well as for tournament winners.
“Creating meaningful experiences like this helps students connect passion with purpose,” added Benjamin Wood, Chief Technology Officer and MSAP Director. “When kids see the fun side of tech and the career possibilities that come with it, learning becomes an adventure.”
Texas Gaming Empire, a professional Esports organization based in San Antonio, provided the setup and support for the gaming tournament that students got to participate in during the expo.
