Longview ISD trustees voted Monday to cancel the May 6 elections for two seats that have candidates running unopposed.

Place 4 trustee Ginia Northcutt drew no opposition and will serve another term. Place 2 trustee Jud Murray is stepping down after three terms and will be replaced by retired LISD educator Ava Welge, the lone candidate to file for office.

Later, board members approved the $1.5 million purchase of 4.8 acres during their regular meeting Monday night.

The land is located at 3100 Airline Road, adjacent to Longview High School and Lobo Stadium at the corner of the Hawkins Parkway intersection.

Assistant Superintendent Lynn Marshall said the property is desirable for future growth of this area of the district.

'I think we would be remiss not to pursue this offer,' said Place 1 trustee Dr. Mark Camp. 'That property is only going to increase in value, and this is a tremendous opportunity and potential investment for the taxpayers of Longview ISD.'
