The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recognized Longview Independent School District's (LISD) Child Nutrition Program with the Turnip the Beet Award at the Silver level for their commitment to providing quality and nutritious meals during the summer of 2022.

Mrs. Phyllis Dozier, LISD Director for Child Nutrition, expressed her excitement, "Wow, our district was one of 26 sponsors from the state of Texas to receive this recognition, one of 16 Texas awardees to receive a silver award, and part of an elite group of only 98 award-winning sponsors nationwide."

This recognition highlights LISD's unwavering commitment to providing appetizing and nutritious meals to children in the community. The program's success places LISD among an elite group of only 98 award-winning sponsors across the country.

In honor of their achievement, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and USDA are presenting LISD with certificates and a digital award that can be displayed on their website and social media. TDA is set to announce and provide a display to recognize all 2022 Turnip the Beet awardees at MegaCon 2023 in May.

Ms. Catherine Wright Steele, Administrator of Food and Nutrition for the Texas Department of Agriculture, praised LISD's efforts.

"USDA recognition for excellence is an achievement reserved for the top nutrition providers," she said. "Longview ISD exemplifies this excellence."

Steele also expressed her hope that the district will continue their outstanding efforts in summer 2023 and "help Texas remain a leader in federal nutrition programs."

The recognition of Longview ISD's Child Nutrition Program with the Turnip the Beet Award at the Silver level is a testament to the district's commitment to providing quality and nutritious meals to children.
