The Longview Chapter of National AMBUCS’ Youth Auxiliary Chapter has strived to live up to the organizations goal of inspiring mobility and independence. During a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at LHS, their hard work was recognized.
The local group received an award that was presented the previous week at the 97th AMBUCS National Conference, recognizing them as having been the most outstanding in the national organization for the 2018-19 year.
Suzanne Sanders who helps run the youth chapter presented the students the award, congratulating them on their hard work.
“I think it’s a great thing (to have received) that will maybe promote AMBUCS and get people to join the organization and help more people,” said Sophomore Josh Sanders.
AMBUCS is a national nonprofit organization that aims to help people conquer challenges associated to a disability. By donating Amtrykes (trikes that can be altered in various ways allowing disabilities to no longer be a barrier to riding a bike), building ramps at homes and many more ways, AMBUCS has helped people young and old throughout the country to have more active lives.
“The satisfaction you get when you see a person that hasn’t been out of their house in months if not years (be able to finally leave their house) is rewarding,” said Kevin Ingram who is the ramp coordinator for the local AMBUCS. His position requires him to check out a home then figure out the design for the ramp and the materials needed.
“AMBUCS helps any kid with any disability. We’ll build ramps for them, no charge,” said Sanders. “We have fundraisers to raise money to build trikes to give away.”
