Referrals are now being accepted for Longview ISD's Gifted & Talented (G/T) program for the 2023-24 school year.

Anyone may refer a student for G/T services, including teachers, parents, or others. To make a referral, complete the form on the district website or request a paper copy from the school counselor.
While referrals are accepted throughout the year, the time windows are specific to grade level:

Student Achievement Performance
Students who score in the 90th national percentile rank or above in math and/or reading on the achievement assessment will move to the second phase of the G/T process. The national percentile rank requirement will increase to the 95th percentile in spring testing.
Testing
Testing will be online this school year, except for kindergarten. It will take place over one to two days. Parents will be notified of testing dates, times, and locations ahead of time.
Program Philosophy
The philosophy of the Longview ISD G/T program includes these core beliefs:
- Gifted students have unique educational needs requiring support and advocacy through a differentiated academic program.
- Gifted students need to interact with intellectual and general education peers.
- Balanced programming supports both cognitive and emotional development.
- Effective programming equips gifted students to become lifelong, self-directed learners.
State Goal
Students participating in G/T services will demonstrate self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication skills. This is shown through innovative, advanced products and performances reflecting creativity. High school graduates who participated in G/T services will have produced professional-quality products and performances.
District Goals
Students in the G/T program will:
- Develop communication, relationship, and participation skills.
- Address subject matter through a compacted, advanced curriculum to produce original products.
- Demonstrate creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Develop independent learning skills, desire, and confidence.
Curriculum
G/T curriculum must be differentiated from the regular classroom. It will be based on:
- Individual needs, abilities, and interests.
- Activities emphasizing thinking skills over knowledge accumulation.
- Higher order thinking skills.
- Divergent and creative thinking.
- Active learner involvement.
- Independent, self-directed learning skills.
- Problem-solving, investigation, and exploration.
- Healthy self-concept and peer relationships.
State law defines gifted and talented students as those who: perform remarkably high compared to peers; exhibit high capability in intellectual, creative, or artistic areas; possess unusual leadership capacity; or excel in a specific academic field.
