Lobo valedictorian grabs state honor for journalism

Fri May 29, 2015

High School commencement is usually the farewell. A finale. The swan song. But when Hannah Brown walked across the graduation stage on May 22, she still had some unfinished Lobo business at the Texas UIL Academics Meet in Austin.

Brown won statewide silver for her headline writing – four days after she accepted her diploma as the 2015 Longview High School valedictorian. To punch her ticket for the Austin event, Brown had to compete against hundreds of other young journalists from across the region and state. At the state competition, she was required to craft headlines for six articles in a 45-minute span.

“This has been a great year for UIL Journalism,” Longview High School journalism advisor Sasha Cantu said. “I couldn’t be more proud of all my students who competed. Hannah was up against some tough competition and really shined. I’m honored to be her coach.”

Brown wasn’t the only Lobo graduate in Austin this week. Indira Zamora placed in the top 12 statewide for computer applications, having qualified for the state meet with a top three finish at the regional contest.

“The experience of going to State and the satisfaction of accomplishing her academic goals has made (Indira’s) senior year a most memorable one,” Carolyn Warren said. Warren is a business, graphics and web teacher at Longview High School and was Zamora’s UIL coach.
